After a brief calm, the relationship between Britain and the European Union fell into crisis again because of the trade arrangement in Northern Ireland, and the negotiations were deadlocked.
On November 9, Irish Deputy Prime Minister Leo walladkar said that the Irish government had held a ministerial meeting to discuss contingency plans to deal with the EU UK trade war triggered by the unilateral suspension of the implementation of some contents of the Northern Ireland protocol.
Warradkar also warned that if the UK continues to threaten to suspend the implementation of the provisions of the Northern Ireland protocol in the next few days, the EU can only retaliate: "I don't think anyone wants to see the EU suspend its trade and cooperation agreement (TCA) with the UK, but if the UK takes such action... I think the EU will have no choice."
According to the trade and cooperation agreement between the UK and the EU, either party must give 12 months' notice of termination of the agreement, and then resume trade in accordance with the provisions of the world trade organization. This will push the two sides to the brink of "brexit without agreement".
The Northern Ireland protocol is an important part of the brexit agreement, which stipulates that the Northern Ireland region belonging to the UK will remain in the EU single market and customs union, and the commodity flow with the EU country Ireland does not need customs inspection, but the Northern Ireland and the island of Great Britain (including England, Scotland and Wales) The flow of goods between countries is subject to customs inspection.
Under such an arrangement, there will be no "hard border" between Northern Ireland and Ireland, which is conducive to maintaining local peace and stability and preventing the recurrence of decades long armed conflicts in the second half of the 20th century.
But in Britain's view, this arrangement is "unsustainable". Although this arrangement was approved by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in October 2019, the British government said that the damage caused by this arrangement far exceeded the expectations at that time and needed to be fundamentally rewritten. The EU made a concession last month to significantly reduce the customs process of British goods destined for Northern Ireland, but this has not satisfied the UK.
The EU argued that if there is no comprehensive legal control over animal and plant products, Ireland's position in the EU single market will be damaged, because Irish goods will no longer be credible and need to be inspected when entering the EU. Therefore, Britain is threatening Ireland's economic rights as an EU member state.
Next, the United Kingdom may trigger Article 16 of the protocol, which allows the United Kingdom or the European Union to take unilateral actions, provided that either party determines that the post brexit trade agreement has a serious negative impact on its interests.
If the EU decides to fight back against Britain's behavior, the trade war between Britain and Europe will also lead to the economic damage of EU countries, especially France, Belgium and the Netherlands, which are closely related to the British economy. The European Union has set aside 5 billion euros to compensate the governments and enterprises hit by the economic blow caused by Britain's brexit.
At the same time, tensions in Northern Ireland are increasing and there have been many violent protests because the pro British United Party of Northern Ireland is also dissatisfied with the protocol.
According to the microblog message of "consular through train", recently, a number of violent Bus Burning incidents occurred in Northern Ireland, UK, which aroused people's strong concern about social security. The Chinese Consulate General in Belfast reminded Chinese citizens in Northern Ireland to pay close attention to the local security and epidemic situation, be vigilant, pay attention to prevention, and try not to go out unless necessary to ensure personal and epidemic prevention safety.
Re emergence of contradictions: Britain asked to re talk about Northern Ireland's status, and the EU countered that it was considering abandoning the brexit agreement
